E-Bike and E-Scooter Restrictions

Prohibited Areas

Electric devices may not be ridden in the following areas:

• Parking lots
• Sidewalks
• Driveways
• Bus loops
• Playgrounds
• Building entrances
• Bicycle areas
• Courtyards
• Athletic fields

Parking Rules

• Park only in designated bicycle areas.
• Do not block entrances, sidewalks, fire lanes, accessible routes, or traffic.
• Users are responsible for securing their own device.

Device Requirements

• Class 3 e-bikes cannot be operated by individuals under 14 years old. (MCL 257.662a)
• Electric motorcycles and e-moto bikes must be licensed as a moped or motorcycle and operated by a licensed and insured driver. (MCL 258.658)
• Devices must be legal under Michigan law, with no modifications for increased speed or performance.
• Devices must be safe and well maintained. Damaged or unsafe batteries are prohibited.

Safety Requirements

• Helmets are required for riders under 18 years old on Class 3 e-bikes. (MCL 257.660)
• Helmets are required for riders under 19 years old on e-moto bikes.
• Lights and reflectors are required when riding after dark. (MCL 257.662)
• Obey all traffic laws and signals. Yield to pedestrians. Helmets are recommended for all riders.
• Passengers are not permitted unless the device is specifically designed for multiple riders.

Consequences for Violations

• A violation may result in a warning and parent or guardian notification.
• Consequences may include revocation of privileges, school disciplinary action, and/or referral to law enforcement.
